The new King of "the 5th" |
We finally hit the road
again in early April and we have a new traveling companion. Briscoe the cat is now a traveling
feline! The plan was to spend two plus
weeks in Salt Lake City and then head due east to join Sara and Drew prior to
the arrival of our new grandson. Pat
attended a week-long conference in SLC on genealogy research in the Azores
Islands (part of Portugal) and I was going to spend my time doing genealogy
research in the Family History Library (the mecca to genealogists). However, Sara experienced a daycare crisis
when Drew was leaving town, so I abandoned Pat and flew to Denver for three
days to take care of Jonah until Drew returned.
I had a wonderful time spending one-on-one alone time with Jonah. I could be prejudiced; but he’s a real cutie!

Jonah on Easter Sunday |
The day after I returned to SLC a late spring
blizzard moved east across Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. We had 6 inches of snow in the SLC RV park
and the entire east-west freeway in Wyoming (that we planned to use to get to
Colorado) was closed for several days due to the weather and a 65 vehicle
pileup.

Pat kills time by doing minor repair jobs |
In fact, for two days, ALL the
passes east from SLC were closed. When
Sara informed us on Friday evening that she was going to be induced on Tuesday
morning, we started to panic thinking that we wouldn’t make it to Colorado in
time for the arrival of the new baby (and we were the babysitters for Jonah).

Pat kills more time in an "Irish Pub" |
With mixed road reports, we headed east on
Sunday morning knowing we could stop anytime we needed to and spend the night
in “the 5th”. Fortunately, it
turned out that they had just cleared the Wyoming freeway and reopened the road. The landscape was totally white and frozen;
but the road was clear and we arrived in our Loveland, Colorado RV park for a
one night stay in late afternoon.
